Regional Quarter-final, Big Red, 10-0, vs. Salem Quakers, 7-3, Friday, November 3rd, 2017, at Death Valley.

STEUBENVILLE — Big Red scored early and often Friday in rolling to a 49-14 victory over Salem in the Division IV, Region 13 quarterfinals at Harding Stadium.

Steubenville (11-0) got on the board with 10:29 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Jacob Bernard. The hosts started the drive at the Salem 9 thanks to an 89-yard return of the opening kickoff by Jamal Petteway. Bernard’s scoring plunge came on fourth down.

Reno Saccoccia’s crew then got a huge break on the ensuing kick when Brock Baddeley fumbled and Dylan Cunningham pounced on the loose pigskin at the Quaker 17. Five snaps later, Bernard took it over from 5 yards out. Ian Phillips’ conversion kick made it 14-0 with 9:06 still showing in the opening quarter.

Big Red would score four more times before the intermission to lead 42-0. Bernard’s third touchdown came on a 2-yard run. Caleb Mitchell powered his way in from 18 yards out after a blocked Salem punt from Quentin Moore. Javon Davis then got into the scoring act on runs of 9 and 55 yards.

“I’m happy with the win,” Big Red coach Reno Saccoccia said. “It’s win and you’re in and we won, so we’re still in. That’s a plus, but we have plenty of things to fix.”

Saccoccia’s crew will meet Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, a 13-7 winner over Poland, in next week’s regional semifinals. The site for that game will be determined by the OHSAA on Sunday. Salem finishes its season at 7-4.

“They had the long kickoff return, and I thought we had pretty good coverage,” Salem head coach Ron Johnson said. “Then we make them go to fourth down. Our kids battled, but they were able to score.

“We told our kids coming in we had to handle the onslaught, handle the quick flurry and hang in there. They get two early scores and it’s 14-0 after the first quarter. We moved the ball and our defense forced a punt. It’s just so overwhelming. Big Red is relentless. They just throw bodies at you. They’re just a really, really good football team.”

After Big Red’s second touchdown, the Quakers did show some offensive life, moving from their own 30 to the Big Red 28. The drive was stopped when DaJuan Jones picked off a Mitch Davidson pass at the 8.

Salem’s defense recorded a stop and forced a punt, but the offense was unable to move the football.

Big Red recorded the first score of the second half, which was played with a running clock, on a 16-yard Clayton Criss to Cunningham pass. Davidson threw scoring passes to Zach Bezon and Chase Ackerman to account for Salem’s touchdowns.

Bernard paced Big Red’s rushing attack with 131 yards, all coming in the first half, while Davis added 85. As a team, Steubenville rushed for 317 yards and the six touchdowns.

Defensively, Big Red held the Quakers to 122 yards (3 rushing and 119 passing). Before Saccoccia began substituting freely in the third quarter, Salem had just 24 yards of offense.

Penalties were a major problem for the winners as they drew 12 flags for 133 yards.

“I’m always happy with a win, but I thought we could have shown better discipline,” Saccoccia said. “Sometimes a team reflects its coach, and I didn’t have our guys prepared to play a solid game tonight. We had a great start. We were fast, we played physical and we played good football. We just have to show more discipline.”

Despite the loss, Johnson said he was not disappointed with his kids.

“We value effort so much and so greatly,” he said. “I don’t think there was a snap tonight when we didn’t play hard. We played that way until the last second, and if they had put more time on there, we’d gladly would have played some more.

“We love to play football, and we want to play as much as we can and just keep getting better.”

Regional Semi-final, Big Red, 11-0, vs. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney Cardinals, 7-4, Friday, November 10th, 2017, at Salem's Reilly Stadium.

Steubenville, now 12-0 and the No. 1 seed in Division IV, Region 13, spotted Youngstown Cardinal Mooney a 7-0 lead Friday, then reeled off 19 unanswered points. It wasn’t until the defense came up big with less than a minute to go, however, that the regional semifinal triumph was guaranteed.

Quentin Moore pounced on a Cardinal fumble with 31 seconds to play, Javon Davis took a knee on the final snap and Big Red had a 19-14 win over Mooney at a jam-packed Reilly Stadium.

“I’m so proud of our players,” Reno Saccoccia said after Big Red collected just its second victory in nine tries against Mooney. “We dug ourselves a lot of holes tonight but every time we did, we were able to dig ourselves out. We made some mistakes but I’m very happy with the way things turned out.

“We were a very physical football team tonight and I knew we had to be against Mooney. We played fast and sound football. We had two turnovers that hurt and penalties that hurt us. But our kids love the game of football. They love to play football and they love playing for Big Red.”

Mooney, which drops the curtain at 7-5, got the game’s initial score on the first play of the second quarter. It came when speedy Chris Gruber went around the left end and sprinted 80 yards to pay dirt.

Big Red battled back and scored with 6:26 left before the half on a 1-yard plunge by Jacob Bernard. The conversion kick was blocked.

Saccoccia’s squad missed a big chance following the touchdown when a huge hit by Jamal Petteway separated a Mooney ball carrier from the football, Johnny Agresta recovering in Mooney territory. The offense couldn’t capitalize and had to punt it away.

Agresta’s second recovery on Mooney’s next touch led to the go-ahead touchdown, a 12-yard Javon Davis to DaJuan Jones pass. Big Red went for two but Agresta was stopped short.

Steubenville was right back in business as Ian Phillips’ squib kick was recovered by Lucas Koval at the Mooney 40. With 17 seconds left before intermission, Bernard plowed in from the 1. Phillips’ kick made it 19-7.

Big Red had two chances to put the game away in the second half, moving deep into Cardinal territory but both threats were thwarted by fumbles.

Mooney took advantage of the second turnover, traveling from its own 13 to score with 6:25 left. The touchdown came on a 30-yard sprint by Gruber.

The Cardinals would get one last chance, starting a drive from their own 17 with 3:04 left to play. They moved to the 39 and were facing a fourth and 7. Mooney connected on the front end of a hook and ladder play, but the ball was pitched wildly and Moore came through with the victory-sealing recovery.

Bernard finished with 194 yards for Big Red, which will face Perry in next week’s regional title game. Gruber had 158 rushing for Mooney.

Saccoccia brushed off a question about his program playing for a fifth straight regional title, noting “this is for the 2017 team.”

“This team is going for a regional title next week,” he said. “We’re going to start working on that one during the bus ride home. I want to congratulate this team on the job they’ve done. They played great football tonight now we need to clean some things up and get ready for next week.”

Regional Final, Big Red, 12-0, vs. the Perry Piratess, 12-0, Friday, November 17th, 2017, at Niles' Bo Rein Stadium.

NILES – Big Red rode a “fantastic first half” to a 33-21 victory over Perry in the Division IV, Region 13 championship game Friday inside Bo Rein Memorial Stadium.

The win gives Steubenville its fifth-consecutive regional title and sends it into next week’s state semifinals. Big Red and Shelby will match 13-0 marks in the Final Four.

“We played just a fantastic first half then did just enough in the second half to win the game,” said Big Red’s Reno Saccoccia. “In the first half, our offense, defense and special teams really were fantastic.”

Perry, which finishes at 12-1, put a scare into the region’s top seed when speedy freshman Jaylen Anderson returned the opening kickoff for an apparent touchdown. The Pirates, however, were called for a block in the back and the score was nullified.

After forcing a punt on Perry’s first possession, Big Red struck quickly. Javon Davis hit Jonathon Blackmon on a perfectly executed screen pass and Blackmon went 58 yards for the opening score.

Steubenville struck again on its next touch, Davis hitting a wide open Alec Taylor over the middle for a 27-yard score.

Perry got on the board with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter on a 2-yard plunge by Tyler Horvath. The Pirates then pulled off a perfect onside kick, Noah Gourley recovering at the Big Red 49. The Big Red defense, however stepped up and the Pirates failed to take advantage of the turnover.

Big Red’s third touchdown came on a 7-yard Davis to Taylor pass. Then junior linebacker Eric Lulla picked off a Kolston Brewster pass and returned it 17 yards for a score. Ian Phillips’ conversation kick made it 26-7 Big Red.

Perry got a huge break with 30 seconds left before the intermission when Erik Somogyi picked off a Davis pass and returned it to the Big Red 10. Brewster then hit Anderson for a touchdown to make it 26-14.

Big Red opened the second half by marching 51 yards for its final touchdown. Jacob Bernard did the honors from 6 yards away. Steubenville started with a short field after Ty Arlesic recovered an onside kick attempt by Perry.

Perry pulled closer on Brewster’s touchdown pass to Josh Martin.

After that score, Perry threatened twice but each time Kwadre Williams delivered huge sacks of Brewster on fourth downs to thwart the threats. The final Pirate opportunity was snuffed out by a Gino Pierro interception.

“I’m really happy for our kids,” Saccoccia said. “That was a hungry team they played. We needed that drive to open the second half and I think it kind of sealed the game for us.

“The defense took over after that and we held for dear life. We played good enough to win and we are practicing on Thanksgiving thanks to these players and the effort they delivered tonight.”

Bernard had another huge night for Big Red, running for 184 yards on 38 trips. Davis completed nine of his 10 passes for 137 yards.

Brewster threw for 219 and the two scores but was picked off twice. Jacob Allen has six receptions for 102 yards. The Pirates finished with a negative 25 yards rushing as Big Red’s defense recorded eight sacks.

State Semi Final, Big Red, 13-0, vs. the Shelby Whippets, 13-0, Friday, November 24th, 2017, at University of Akron's Infocision Stadium.

AKRON – Steubenville drove past the Pro Football Hall of Fame Friday on its way to InfoCision Stadium.

Next Saturday, Big Red will stop at the hall, hit the turf at Tom Benson Stadium and compete for the Ohio Division IV championship.

Big Red, thanks to a huge second half comeback, is in the Division IV title game for the third consecutive year via a thrilling 35-22 victory over Shelby on the campus of Akron University.

Reno Saccoccia’s club was down 22-21 at the half still trailed by one after three but took control during the final 12 minutes to stay unbeaten at 14-0. Shelby, making its first ever appearance in the Final Four, finishes at 13-1. Big Red will meet Clarksville Clinton-Massie, a 28-21 winner of New Concord John Glenn, on Saturday.

“Everybody thought this game was over at the half,” Saccoccia said. “Shelby is a very good football and we’re a good football team. Nobody was going to quit in this game.

“We had another 24 minutes to go. Credit Shelby, they brought the best out of us and we brought the best out of them and that’s what football is all about.”

After failing to capitalize on a third quarter scoring opportunity, Big Red scored with 11:17 to play on a 36-yard screen pass from Javon Davis to Johnny Agresta. After catching the ball, Agresta cut to the middle of the field and raced to the end zone. The scoring play came on a fourth and 12. Saccoccia elected to go for two but Davis’ pass fell incomplete.

The Steubenville defense then delivered a key stop. Agresta and Kwadre Williams combined for a huge sack of Shelby quarterback Brennan Armstrong forcing a turnover on downs.

Taking over at its own 40, Big Red moved 60 yards for the game’s final score. All the yardage came via the ground. Jacob Bernard found pay dirt on a 9-yard sprint. Agresta, who took several direct snaps on the march, and Davis also contributed key gains.

Alec Taylor ran for the two-pointer to finish the scoring.

Big Red jumped out to a quick 21-6 lead but Shelby scored 17 points during the final 6:57 of the first half to lead 22-21. Ten of the points came off Big Red turnovers.

Steubenville took the opening kick and moved 80 yards for a touchdown, it came on a 40-yard Davis to DaJuan Jones pass. Jones made the first Shelby defender miss then sprinted to the end zone.

The Whippets quickly responded, going 70 yards on their initial touch. The score when Armstrong hit Carter Brooks from 16 yards out. The conversion try failed.

Big Red struck again on its second and third possessions. Big runs by Jonathon Blackmon (36 yards) and Bernard (47 yards) highlighted TD drive number two. Davis dropped a 5-yard scoring pass over the Shelby defense and into the arms of Blackmon. The third six-pointer came on a 1-yard plunge by Bernard.

The Whippets needed just 40 seconds to respond. Armstrong connected with C. Brooks for a 62-yard gain to the Big Red 6, then trotted into the end zone from there. It was 21-13 Big Red with 6:17 left in the half.

Shelby got ball right when Big Red failed to cover the ensuing kick, the Whippets recovering at the Steubenville 25. Armstrong ran for five before sprinting in from the 20. A pass for extra points failed.

Hunter Bishop’s interception of a Davis pass, the ball deflected off the hands of a Big Red receiver, put the Whippets back in business at the Steubenville 41.

Big Red got a turnover of its own on Shelby’s first possession of second half thanks to a Jones interception. Saccoccia’s crew moved inside Shelby territory but a holding call thwarted the attempt.

“There was no real difference in the second half,”Saccoccia said. “They made plays in the first half and we made plays. Both teams made plays in the second half. Our plays involved running hard and pounding the ball. We did what we do and they did what they do.

“I’m happy for these guys. It’s going to be a heck of a game next week. I’ll let them enjoy this victory for now. We’ll start working on Clinton-Massie during the bus ride home.

Davis had a solid night for Big Red, completing 12 of his 15 passes for 166 and three touchdowns. Bernard collected 154 yards on the ground and his two scores.

Armstrong, the University of Virginia commit, finished with 183 passing yards and 90 on the ground.

State Final, Big Red, 14-0, vs. the Clinton Massie Falcons, 13-1, Saturday, December 2nd, 2017, at Canton's Tom Benson Hall Of Fame Stadium.

CANTON — The third time did prove to be a charm for the Steubenville football program.

Javon Davis threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more Saturday as Big Red outscored Clarksville Clinton-Massie 50-36 before 10,251 fans inside Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium to capture the Ohio Division IV championship.

With the victory, Big Red, which lost the last two Div. IV finales by a total of six points, secured the program’s fourth state title and finished the season at 15-0. Steubenville now has earned championships in three different divisions (II, III and IV).

“That was a great high school football game,” Big Red’s Reno Saccoccia said during his post-game press conference. “We beat a very strong, very well-coached, very physical football team today. These kids sitting here with me (six players joined the coach for the media session) played last year and they tried like hell to come out victorious but just came up short. They kept trying, kept climbing and kept fighting.

“In 1983 when I got this job, I put a sign up in our locker room that says our tradition was built by a lot of people. When we started this season, these guys were living on the tradition of the program but as the season went on, they added a piece of themselves. Now the 2017 team will be remembered with the great ones in Big Red history.”

Big Red’s initial drive started at its own 10 thanks to a holding call on the opening kick. Saccoccia’s crew, however, quickly marched 90 yards in just four plays to take a lead it would never surrender. The touchdown came on a 32-yard burst up the middle by senior tailback Jacob Bernard. He appeared to be stopped near the line of the scrimmage but broke two tackles and sprinted to the end zone.

Bernard also ran for 21 yards on the march and Davis hit Johnny Agresta for a 38-yard gain.

Steubenville then got a break on Clinton-Massie’s first possession when Christian Poynter couldn’t handle a pitch and the pigskin fell to the turf, Gino Pierro recovering at the Falcon 25. Davis found Alec Taylor in the corner of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown.

The Falcons, who averaged 306 rushing yards per game, stormed right back on two big pass completions by Corey Stulz. First he hit speedy Luke Richardson for 56 yards then found Seth Schmidt for a 9-yard score.

Big Red’s offense moved right down the field again, Davis finding Taylor again, this time for a 26-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked and Steubenville led 20-7 after the initial 12 minutes.

Steubenville made it four for four with a touchdown early in the second quarter, coming a pretty 18-yard Davis to Agresta pass. The senior wide receiver stretched out for the reception and pulled it in with one hand. Ian Phillips’ kick made it 27-7.

“I knew I was open but at first I thought the pass was going to be overthrown,” Agresta said. “Then I realized I could the ball. I just went up wanting to make a play and help my teammates.”

On the ensuing kick, Clinton-Massie’s Garrett Trampler fielded the ball at his own 28, squirted through the Steubenville coverage team and raced 72 yards for a touchdown. He thus became the first player in Division IV history to return a kickoff for a score.

Big Red then got a safety when Stulz was called for intentional grounding in the end zone.

Following the free kick, Davis completed a pass to Jonathon Blackmon in the flat. The senior fullback cut back to the middle and raced 60 yards to the end zone. Phillips’ kick put Steubenville up 36-14.

On the last play of the half, Richardson returned a Davis punt 53 yards for a touchdown. A pass for the two-point conversion failed.

“We called a time out with 10 seconds left because we were looking for something to give us a spark,”said Clinton-Massie coach Dan McSurley. “Truth be told, we were really trying to block the punt. I think they were so preoccupied with keeping us from blocking the punt that Luke has some room to run.

“That return sparked us and it gave us some momentum going into the locker room. We came out in the second half and fought back. We just fell short.”

During the first half, Big Red compiled 309 offensive yards (187 passing and 122 rushing) compared to 113 for the Falcons. Davis was 7-of-8 passing and Bernard ran for 95 yards. Unfortunately, he was injured early in the second quarter and was unable to return to the field.

“There was adversity on both sides and both teams had to overcome adversity,” Saccoccia said. “We had a little less than they had. Most of our adversity was self-imposed. As bad as the end of the first half looked when we had a couple of kids go down with injuries and we had to fill in real quick before the half, I think it made us stronger.

“I think the situation helped show the coaches who were the real leaders on this team. And, we found out we had some real leaders on this team.”

Clinton-Massie struck quickly to open the third quarter. Stulz ran for 24 yards and the Falcons got 15 more thanks to a personal foul against Steubenville. A Stulz pass was intercepted by Pierro but Richardson forced a fumble on the pick and recovered at the Big Red nine. Tyler Beam then sprinted in from there. A run for the conversion failed.

With 4:29 left in the third, Clinton-Massie pulled to within seven at 36-29 on a 28-yard field goal by Derick Carlisle.

Big Red’s scoring drought ended on the first play of the fourth quarter when Davis, thanks to a very hard run, went 13 yards on a quarterback draw. Steubenville went with a squib kick after the score, Taveon Crawford recovering at the Clinton-Massie 46. After a 2-yard gain by Jamal Petteway, Davis sprinted up the middle for a 44-yard touchdown.

Clinton-Massie still wasn’t ready to quit. The Falcons marched right down the field for their final score, coming on a 3-yard run by Poynter. The drive was aided by a personal foul call against Big Red.

One final C-M threat ended on a fourth down sack by Big Red’s Kwadre Williams.

Big Red finished the game with 464 offensive yards on 59 plays compared to 233 on 46 for the Falcons. Clinton-Massie was limited to 114 rushing yards.

Davis threw for 213 and added another 111 rushing. Once Bernard went out, he became Big Red’s prime running threat.

“Javon had a beautiful game,” Saccoccia said.

“The success I had today was all because of my teammates,” Davis added. “I love them to death and couldn’t have done anything without them. We definitely wanted to win this one for Jake (Bernard).”

McSurley admitted Big Red’s offense caused some matchup problems for his Falcons.

“They had athletes galore,” he said. “I’ve done this for 32 years and you know when there are matchup issues. They were big upfront, probably the biggest line we’ve seen all year.”

Saccoccia was extremely pleased with the effort of his defensive unit.

“Our defense took away what Clinton-Massie does best, that is run the football,” he said. “We made them left-handed. They have a great receiver but the better our pass rush was, the worse pass was. In high school football, you want to stop the run and tackle the pass and I think we did a great job of that.”

“We had to fill our gaps and play physical football,” said Big Red defensive tackle Quentin Moore. “It was a matter of us executing what our coaches were stressing to us all week.”

As Marlon Lawrence, Moore’s teammate up front, noted the Steubenville defense “went out and did what we had to do.”

“Our coaches stressed to us all week that we had to get into our gaps that’s what we did.”

McSurley pointed out he was “proud of our guys and what they have accomplished. And, I’m proud to be their coach.”

“It just wasn’t our night,” he said. “I’ve said all along my greatest fear is getting beat by a lesser team. If you give everything you have and get beat by a better team, that’s all you can do and our effort was awesome. It wasn’t our night but that’s football. It doesn’t take anything away from what our team has accomplished.

“They (Big Red) played kind of the perfect game. They really didn’t turn it over. It was their night. They were back-to-back runners up and they may have had a little more experience than us. We had a great week of preparation but it wasn’t our night.”

Big Red’s appearance in the championship game was its sixth since 2005. Steubenville now has a 3-3 record during that span. Saccoccia-led teams have a 4-5 all-time record in titles contests.

“I asked our guys to play as physical and fast as they could,” the Hall of Fame coach said. “I told them champions have to get punched in the mouth, have bloody teeth and keep coming back.

“Clinton-Massie is a good football team. They punched us in the face but we fought. I’m so happy for our guys and I’m very proud of what they accomplished this season.”
